Is Social Media An Effective Means To Engage Students?

Social media can be an effective means to engage students when used properly and with the right direction from the teacher. If the students are not given enough structure when using social media, they will get carried away with the social part and less about the media, data, and personal information sharing of the internet.

We can teach kids to use social media and networking sites responsibly, think critically, value others and form their own opinions. This can enhance learning by interacting with different individuals and groups of people, giving and receiving products of information and opinions.

Social media is an inherently democratic practice: it champions the sharing of opinions and extensions of those who participate in a given forum, and is (unofficially) regulated by those who participate in the community.  This provides a place for students to respectfully exercise their democratic rights, being able to publicly agree or disagree and defend their own ideas to the extent they choose.

Incorporating social media in the classroom allows students to interact with the everyday curriculum with a form of technology they are already comfortable with.  Don't be surprised if they teach you a thing or two about using social media!
